When you think of the best that Northern Ontario has to offer, you’re thinking Temagami. Pronounced “Te-MAWG-a-mee” (the word is Ojibway for “deep water by the shore”), it is the reality that fuels the popular perception of Canada’s great Northland: old growth pine forests. Smooth blue waters. Brilliantly white, powdery snow. Bountiful fish and wildlife.
At first, the size of the lake might put you off. But don’t let that intimidate you. Despite its 50,000 acres and 25 miles one way, the layout makes it easy to get about. Access to the lake sets you up, and since there are only two main connections, everything flows from there.
Temagami has four major arms, long finger-like bays, extending from the central hub to the north, northeast, southwest, and south. Spot 1,600 islands and a dozen major points in these fingers, and there’s little unprotected water.
While the lake trout and walleye fisheries have attracted the attention of anglers throughout the world, less attention has been paid to bass, pike, and whitefish fisheries. These species provide excellent fishing and are growing in popularity with anglers.
Ice-fishing usually starts in Temagami in early January. Lake Temagami produces excellent whitefish in the early season until trout season opens in mid-February to mid-March. Most lodges have ice-fishing packages which provide food and accommodations, transportation to a heated hut, bait and equipment. Instead of driving to Temagami, consider taking the train. The Northlander departs Union station in Toronto at mid-day and delivers you rested and ready for a relaxing getaway in Temagami at 6:30 pm, just in time for a great meal, and some evening fishing.
